CUFA BC Cancels the Distinguished Academics Awards Celebration

Created 18 March 2020 15:03

Dear Distinguished Academics Awards recipients and honoured guests,

I hope you are well and staying healthy during these exceptional times. We want to keep you updated as things develop quickly with preventative measures for the spreading coronavirus.

I am sad to inform you that CUFA BC will be canceling the Distinguished Academics Awards gala that was scheduled for April 16. The winners were been announced in an earlier press release.

The rapidly developing situation with the novel coronavirus is bringing changes by the hour to our in-person gatherings across the province and country. As we move closer in time to our event, we realize the pandemic is unlikely to have resolved by then. It’s safer for us all and our community if we avoid congregating in large numbers.

I want to say how sorry I am that we won’t be celebrating together the exceptional work of our colleagues:
Early in Career Award receipient Dr. Dara Kelly of SFU
Academic of the Year receipient Dr. Bonny Norton of UBC
Career Achievement Award receipient Dr. Ken Lertzman of SFU

The CUFA BC Executive is in discussion at the moment about if and how best we will resume our celebration when it safe to do so. In the meantime, know that we will not be holding our awards gala in April and we will keep you updated as we continue to monitor developments and finalize our decisions.

We want to thank you to those of you have already RSVP’d and for your willingness to join us in celebration. We look forward to celebrating with you under better circumstances.

Thank you for your patience and understanding and, most of all, stay safe.

Sincerely,

Jacqueline Holler, President
Annabree Fairweather, Executive Director
