Provincial Budget 2022 Consultations: Select Standing Committee on Finance and Government Services Report
September 30, 2021
Inclusiveness, truth and reconciliation, innovation, recovery and stability — read our submission to the Committee and an analysis of their final recommendations regarding advanced education.
Each year, the Select Standing Committee on Finance and Government Services submits a report to the legislative assembly following its public provincial budget consultation.
This year, CUFA BC’s President presented alongside representatives from Federation of Post-Secondary Educators of BC (FPSE) and Research Universities' Council of British Columbia (RUCBC). We also provided a formal written submission.
Our recommendations for the budget consultation focused on several themes including recovery, stability, innovation, truth and reconciliation, and inclusiveness at BC’s research universities.
In the Committee’s final report, two of the recommendations pertaining to advanced education reflect those made in our submission:
- Indigenous Students, Recommendation 9: Provide additional supports for Indigenous learners, including Elder programs and similar initiatives that provide connection to culture and community, Indigenous counsellors and advisors, and mechanisms to ensure improved access and affordability.
- Operational Funding, Recommendation 11: Recognize the value and importance of post-secondary education by examining the funding model to ensure investments position BC to meet the needs of the future workforce, address operational pressures and programming demands, and include consideration for short-term financial flexibility with clearly defined accountabilities and transparency to support recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.
